I Thought The Waves Would Wait
Updated: Aug 5

Sometimes the biggest waves aren't the ones that crash onto the shore. They're the ones that quietly change the way you think.
The other day here the ocean completely stole the show.
The waves were enormous.
Not just big... the kind that make you stop whatever you're doing and stare for a while.
I was sitting on the balcony working on this blog.
Every few minutes I'd glance up and think, I really need to get a picture of these waves.
Then I'd look back at my laptop.
"I'll go in a minute."
A few minutes became an hour. An hour became the afternoon.
Every time I looked outside, the waves were still there.
.
"The forecast says it'll be the same tomorrow"
There was no rush!
The next morning when I looked out.
The ocean looked like a completely different place.
The giant waves were gone.
The water was calm.
Peaceful.
Beautiful...
...but not the ocean I'd been watching the day before.
I had missed it.
It wasn't the end of the world.
There will be more big waves.
There will be more beautiful mornings...Every morning is beautiful here.
But it made me wonder how often we do this in our lives.
How many sunsets...
Ideas...
Dreams...
Photos...
Waves...
Conversations...
do we quietly move to tomorrow because
we assume they'll still be waiting for us?
Sometimes they are.
Sometimes they aren't.

The distractions can wait. The waves might not.
What surprised me most...
That I wasn't upset about missing the photo. I was surprised by what
it taught me instead.
What I'll remember...
Standing on the balcony long after the waves had gone, realizing I'd been looking at the ocean all day but hadn't really seen it until it changed.
Today's highlight...
It turns out procrastination has excellent ocean views!
We spend a lot of time waiting for perfect moments.
The moments never asked us to wait.
